The Civic Museum of Bormio

Das Stadtmuseum von Bormio

Since 1962 Palazzo De Simoni has held the Civic Museum of Bormio (17th century). It has 14 rooms, some of them decorated with plaster and barque style fresoes. They hold objects divided in to two sections:the historical art and the ethnographical. It is a collection of about 3000 objects, that are an account of the culture, the craftwork, the work, folklore, and religious life of the Bormio area. The carpenters and cobblers workshops have been reconstructed and are displayed. A small cellar holds all the tools used in the numerous phases of milk production, while a large room hold the tools used for the work in the fields and grain production. A big stagecoach that until 1915 was used to cross the Passo dello Stelvio is situated in the museum with carriages, carts and big sleighs. There is also a old collection of skis used for the different disciplines: Nordic, downhill and jumping. There are next to sledges, snow shoes and poles and ice skates. An account of the importance of the female textile activities is the museum that perserves an interesting collection of spinning wheels, teasals, winders and spindles for working with wool and flax, in addtion to a big loom. The sacrality and devotion of the people of Bormio are attested by more than 100 folk tablets ex voto, that come from the Sanctuary of SS. Crocefisso dio Combo of Bormio. A room holds discovered relics from the War of Independence and above all the Great War. The art section has portraits, paintings, furniture, frescoes, alter pieces and crosses. They are an account of the religiousness of the local culture.
