"Seeing things in new ways and from surprising perspectives " - Vito Acconci
Artist & Architect of the Mur Island

*The spectacular architecture now sees itself as a hub, hotspot and showroom for Graz's creative scene. The island invites you to discover extraordinary products of the local creative industry and to get involved in the most diverse facets of the great theme of design.

Highlights of the newly designed Mur Island are the pleasure zone in the completely renovated café, a showroom and the design shop on the upper level. In the outdoor area, info screens present the latest in art, culture, science and design. In addition, a varied programme of events awaits you.

In 2003 the New York artist Vito Acconci planned a steel construction in the form of a half-open shell and anchored it in the Mur. In 2011, Graz will be declared a UNESCO City of Design and thus become part of an international network in which design and the conscious creation of living space play a central role.

The open part - an arena for performances, but also a resting place for sun-seekers. The closed part - a trendy café.

The island - also a new bridge between the two banks of the Mur.

The island brought the Mur back to the people of Graz. Until a few years ago it was a river polluted by sewage. So it hardly bothered them that after its regulation in the 19th century the Mur had dug itself a good 12 metres deeper into its bed. Now the river that separates and connects Graz has good water quality again and has become inviting.
