The Unterfalkenstein Castle is one of the oldest castles in Carinthia, with the first documented reference ("daz nidre Valchenstayn") dating back to 1307.
In 1693 Falkenstein was acquired by Baron Wenzel von Sternbach, whose family owned the castle until 1883. When Hofrat Ferdinand Kaltenegger von Riehorst acquired the castle in 1905, he had a tower pulled down (which had been destroyed in the 17th century) and had the whole building revitalized in the style of the 16th century. He made all these efforts in an attempt to surprise Emperor Franz Josef I, who opened the Tauernbahn route on July 5, 1909.
Parts of the castle were destroyed in a fire in 1968. However, the mighty tower was re-erected in the original, Romanesque style.
Centuries ago Unterfalkenstein had defense walls and a drawbridge, which was replaced by an impressive gate after the fire.
