CONEGLIANO, THE TOWN OF CIMA

Surrounded by gently rolling hills, Conegliano is the birthplace of Giambattista Cima, the "landscape poet" who, together with his great master Bellini, is considered the discoverer of the celestial motif and of Italian landscape painting. The first documentary mention of Conegliano among the possessions of the Bishop of Belluno dates back to 1016, but the history of the town is much older. In the early 12th century it flourished as a free municipality under the leadership of various noble families and developed into a walled village and medieval fortress. From the top of the hill, the castle dominates the town and offers a wide panorama that stretches from the mountains to the plain, where the vines dominate the territory of the Prosecco
Superiore DOCG, declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2019, making it unique. Below, the Renaissance town stretches from Porta Monticano to Torricelle Dante on the ancient Contrada Granda, now Via XX Settembre.
