The Belvedere 21 is not only architecturally highly interesting, but also deals intensively with Austrian art of the 20th and 21st centuries.

The impressive building was erected by star architect Karl Schwanzer as the Austria Pavilion for the 1958 World Expo and opened in 1962 as the Museum for 20th Century Art in Vienna. Today the building is used as a platform for Austrian art from 1945 to the present day in an international context.

Architect Adolf Krischanitz adapted and rebuilt Schwanzer's building for the reopening in 2011. Schwanzer was awarded the Grand Prix d'Architecture in 1958 for his pioneering and technically innovative design. Krischanitz exposed the basement and added a six-storey tower to the complex, which acts as a signal to a large extent.
