When on the water, Hossa National Park opens up a new perspective for the nature lover and the numerous lakes and ponds in the area become literally within your reach. The easy and beginner-friendly lake tour starting from the accessible kayaking pier at Nurmiselkä follows a narrow lake channel and a wider lake area towards the Jatkonjärvi camping area, where there is also an accessible kayaking pier to facilitate landing. Accessible dry toilets are available at the start and finish of the route. Watching the common loon and other waterfowl at close range adds a special flavour to the route. At the end of Lake Jatkonjärvi you will hear the sound of Lounatkoski rapids. You can paddle the route either one-way or as a round trip. In windy weather, it is worth paddling close to the shores. The route can also be started from the kayak pier at the Jatkonsalmi rental cottage.
For information on the accessibility of the trail, please refer to the "Accessibility Report" tab.

The water trail starts from the Nurmiselkä kayak pier, which is less than a kilometre from Hossa Nature Centre. Shortly after leaving, the route turns right and follows the strait of Mykräsalmi for 2.5 km and then over Lake Kenttäjärvi to the narrowest point of the route, the strait of Jatkonsalmi. Here it is possible to take a break and go ashore, but there is no official rest stop in the area. After Jatkonsalmi, the trail opens up to Jatkonjärvi, with a camping area on the opposite shore about 1.5 km away. On Jatkonjärvi it is worth paddling along the windless shore. In addition to an accessible dry toilet, there are numerous campfire places at Jatkonjärvi camping site.
Clothing and shoes suitable for paddling.
Canoe, kayak or SUP board, paddles and paddling vests (helmet in rapids).
Always plan your paddling trip according to your own skills. On lake stretches, it is advisable to paddle close to the shore. Always check unknown rapids from the shore beforehand.
Always bring along first-aid supplies, a change of clothes, matches and a charged phone.
Keep all your equipment well secured in the kayak/canoe, preferably in a waterproof bag or container.
Check the regional weather forecast and the warnings in effect (e.g. forest fire warning).
In case of emergency, call 112.
From Hossa Nature Centre, the Nurmiselkä parking lot is less than a kilometre away. On the way to Hossa, drive along the Jatkonsalmentie road past the Nature Centre and turn left after Keihäslammpi pond into the parking area. The kayaking pier and the accessible dry toilet are at the end of a short graveled access route.
No public transport.
