The Hiidenkierros circular route that passes through the beautiful landscapes of Hiidenportti National Park takes the hiker to explore the wilderness nature of Korpi-Kainuu at its best. The route, which passes through sometimes demanding terrain, is suitable as a day trip destination with rest stops. The route passes through the park's most famous attraction: the majestic Hiidenportti fault valley, whose rock walls fall vertically even twenty meters. In the depth of the canyon, there are black, nutrient-poor ponds. In addition, along the route vary mires and upland forests. Next to Kovasinvaara are the yard meadows of a former wilderness farm, which are among the most valuable traditional landscape sites on state land in Kainuu. Other Hiidenportti attractions also include other sites related to the area's cultural history, such as the ruins of logging and floating camps, floating dams, the twisting pin of the näre trail, the fishing tracks, hay meadows' bottoms, tar pond bottoms, and slash-and-burn birch forests.
Rest stops are at the beginning of the route at Palolampi and halfway at Porttilampi.
The route is marked in the terrain with violet markings.
The route starts at the Palolampi guidance point, which includes a campfire site, a cooking shelter, a well, and the Palolampi rental cottage. From Palolampi, the route heads towards the Hiidenportti canyon landscape, which is followed for about one and a half kilometers initially. After this, the canyon is crossed via stairs and the route continues to the Porttilampi lean-to, which offers an excellent place for a snack break. From the lean-to, you return a kilometer back to the canyon, where a trail branches off to Kovasinvaara. First, you dive into an old forest, which near Kovasinvaara changes into a slash-and-burn birch forest. There are no buildings on Kovasinvaara, but the meadows and the stone piles in their midst tell of the area's habitation. From Kovasinvaara, the journey continues back to Palolampi.
The entire Hiidenkierros is 5 km long, but if you skip the visit to the Porttilampi lean-to, the route is shortened to 3 km. The route is also suitable for children, but it is not passable with strollers. The 3 km route requires about two hours, and the 5 km route with a snack break takes about four hours.
The Hiidenkierros is marked on trees and guide signs with violet paint markings.
