The nine regeneration spots
1 – waterfall
(if travelling by (e-)bike)
ð Even on the way to Kleinarler Hütte, the sound of the waterfall sets a special mechanism in motion: your brain waves synchronise with the alpha waves of the water. This leads to deep physiological relaxation.
Then there is the element of water itself. It is the most valuable resource on our planet. Its presence alone gives you a feeling of safety and security. And when you feel safe, your stress levels drop - quite automatically.
Tip: Take off your shoes and step into the water with your bare feet. Yes, it's refreshing. Yes, it's cold. But after a few breaths, simply leave the water again - and try again.
You're doing the pinch! And that's a real miracle cure for your body:
â Invigorating
â Stress-reducing
â Pain-relieving
â Anti-inflammatory
â Stabilises the circulation
â Strengthens the immune system
â Activates the metabolism
â Improves the quality of sleep
â Stimulates circulation
And with your bare feet you do Earthing at the same time - which also helps you to get rid of your positive radiation at regeneration place 5.
2 – Kleinarler Hütte
ð¡ The Kleinarler Hütte is protected by two mountain friends: the Penkkopf and the Gründegg.
This is the perfect place for social regeneration: Alois and his team always have a bit of fun in store, and a chat with the mountain people really brings you to Wagrain-Kleinarl.
And then there's the food! Homemade delicacies, cheese and organic dairy products from the valley. Speaking of milk: did you know that Alpine milk has health-promoting properties?
ð¥ More sun = more energy = more nutrients. The plants on the mountain pasture store more energy due to the high solar radiation, which leads to a higher fat and protein content in the milk.
ð¨ The alpine air does the rest. It is rich in microorganisms that support your immune system and digestion - just by breathing.
3 – climb uphill
With every step up, everyday life feels further away. After just 30 minutes on the Penkkopf, your worries will be far away.
ð¿ And with every metre of altitude, you breathe cleaner air - with less pollen and more energy.
4 – forest line
The Kleinarler Hütte is located at the forest line ð² - a place that regenerates all the senses.
ð Autumn tip: This is when the forest ‘burns’. The golden yellow larch needles bathe the landscape in an almost surreal blaze of colour.
5 – Drei Lacken
The three mountain ponds ð§ relax you. Simply because they are there. And because you are there.
Want to intensify the effect? Sit on the shore and breathe consciously:
Sit upright
Look straight ahead
Be aware of your breathing
Observe thoughts, but do not judge them
Your stress level drops after eight minutes. After regular exercise, it can even drop by up to 25 %.
6 – cattle trails
Below the Penkkopf, grazing animals have formed small terraces - an invitation to mindful exploration.
And if you reach into the alpine soil with your bare hands, your immune system gets an extra dose of regeneration. Because the alpine microbiome has a direct effect on your body:
â Supports digestion
â Produces vitamins
â Strengthens the body's defences
â Promotes skin flora
And in case you're wondering:
ð¦ A microbiome is the totality of all microorganisms that live in a certain environment. Your body needs them - for health and well-being.
Tip: Earthing! Bare hands on the floor = equalise electrons = regenerate your body.
7 – Penkkopf
A 360° panorama with far-reaching views.
There's no more pondering up here - just marvelling. The view into the valley gives you a feeling of vastness and freedom.
8 – climb downhill
Walking downhill = muscle miracle.
Why? Because it's eccentric training. The muscles have to slow down instead of pulling - and that's exactly what builds strength.
Tip:
ð¶âï¸ Walking downhill without poles - this is how you train your balance.
ðª 90 % of your muscles are active.
9 – Kurzeggalm
The Kurzeggalm combines Wagrain-Kleinarl charm with alpine idyll.
A chat with the mountain people and home-made delicacies - there's no better way to regenerate. And the mountain milk here is just as valuable as at the Kleinarler Hütte.
Culinary tip:
ð Smoked trout at the Kurzeggalm.
𥣠Cheese dumplings at the Kleinarler Hütte.

ð² It takes approx. 1:20 hours by e-bike and approx. 2:30 hours by mountain bike to reach the Kleinarler Hütte (10.3 km, 750 m altitude difference).
𥾠Also accessible on foot from Kleinarl (3.9 km, 760 m elevation gain), approx. 2:30 hours. Alternatively, you can drive to the Hirschleiten parking lot and hike from there to the Kleinarler Hütte (2.6 km, 550 m elevation gain) in approx. 1:45 hours.
Behind the Kleinarler Hütte, take the hiking trail (no. 87) and follow it first onto the ridge (=left) to the Drei Lacken and finally to the Penkkopf (=right). Return on the same trail or alternatively on trail no. 87 to the saddle, turn right there and follow trail no. 81 to the Kurzeggalm. You will reach the Kleinarler Hütte again via the shared trail. Walking time: Approx. 45 minutes each way (if you return from the Penkkopf) and you cover around 230 vertical meters.
This is your time to regenerate and not a race. Take the time you need. And all walking times are perfectly correct.
And this is how you get to the starting point - the Kleinarler Hütte - by (e-)bike:
From Wagrain:
Direction Kleinarl (Attention: In parts you ride along the road. This is recommended for experienced road cyclists) to “Feuersang”. There you turn right and follow the Sauwaldstraße (No. 72) towards Kleinarler Hütte/Kurzeggalm and then turn off to Kleinarler Hütte (12.3 km, 900 vertical meters).
From Kleinarl:
Follow the cycle path into the valley until you reach the Öbrist farm (approx. 3 km after Kleinarl). Shortly after the farm, turn right and cycle uphill along the “Öbristwaldstraße” forest road (no. 72) until you reach the Kleinarler Hütte (10.5 km, 740 m elevation gain).
You can combine both variants into one loop - regardless of whether you are coming from Wagrain or Kleinarl. You can reach the waterfall via the variant described from Kleinarl.
Tip: The descent is also possible via the Hirschleit trail. This starts around 300 vertical meters below the Kleinarler Hütte/Kurzeggalm (1.2 km, 263 vertical meters downhill). This is a single trail with an S2 rating and is only suitable for experienced mountain bikers. You arrive directly in the village of Kleinarl.
