The fourth stage of the five-day tour through the Val d’Hérens impresses with its varied landscapes from the meadows along the mountain stream to the highest point of the entire tour. The starting point could not be more picturesque: Evolène with its beautiful, well-preserved wooden houses and barns, lovingly decorated with flowers in summer. It is no wonder the mountain village was recently named the most beautiful village in western Switzerland.
The path leads through the pastureland of the native Eringer cows – now known nationwide as a Valais traditional symbol. The fighting cows establish hierarchy within the herd – the chance is high that you can witness one of these natural fights right in the middle of the meadow. From spring to autumn, organized cow-fighting events take place throughout the canton, drawing locals and tourists alike with a great atmosphere, raclette, and other specialties.
Above the meadows, the path leads through larch forests up to the Pas de Lona at 2787 m above sea level, the pass connecting the Val d’Hérens with the Val d’Anniviers. With this view, a picnic stop at the pass is highly recommended.
Afterwards, the climb continues to the Cabane des Becs de Bosson, a welcoming mountain hut at the highest point of the five-day tour (2985 m above sea level). The view is probably the most beautiful of the entire stage tour; the Mont Blanc and numerous 4000-meter peaks belong to this breathtaking panorama.
Highlights of the Hike
The picturesque village of Evolène with sun-kissed and flower-decorated wooden chalets. The Pas de Lona – a small high plateau with mountain lakes. The Cabane des Becs de Bosson – a welcoming mountain hut with fantastic views.
The fourth stage of the Tour du Val d’Hérens leads north from the village of Evolène up the valley slope before another ascent heads east to the Pas de Lona. From here, the route zigzags northwards up to the Cabane des Becs de Bosson.
The start of the hike can also be from other villages in the Val d’Hérens. Those who have previously completed the third stage of the five-day route can also start in Les Haudères or La Sage and begin the fourth stage there. Alternatively, the post bus runs to the starting point in Evolène.
