It is located on a steep granite rock in the village of Boleto, west of Pella, at an altitude of around 638 metres. From the terrace in front of the church, the so-called ‘balcony of Cusio’, there is a spectacular panoramic view over the entire lake, the surrounding mountains and the Po Valley as far as Novara.
History
The origins of the sanctuary date back to the 16th century, when a chapel of Our Lady of Sorrows stood on this site. In the 18th century, in 1706, Pietro Paolo Minola from Boleto commissioned the construction of a new shrine after receiving a favour from the Madonna. Construction began around 1725 and the church was completed in 1748. The bell tower and the adjoining priest's house were completed in 1760. The shrine was consecrated by the Bishop of Novara in 1771.
Architecture and art
The church was built in the style of a Greek cross and is crowned with an impressive dome. Inside there are frescoes by the Valsesi painter Lorenzo Peracino and an altarpiece by Fermo Stella da Caravaggio from 1547 depicting the Pietà. The architecture and works of art bear witness to the high level of craftsmanship of the time.
